Quilt Festival entry: black and white gradient

Check out Park City Girl’s Quilt Festival! I decided to join in on the fun, as I’m trying to learn tips and tricks and get inspiration from all of the talented quilt-bloggers out there. I don’t really have very much of a story to go along with it, but this is one of my favorite {finished} quilts. I guess the story could be that I’m very much an amateur when it comes to making quilts. When I started this one, I really had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t know about some handy shortcuts when making triangle quilts – so I cut each and every triangle out by hand, with scissors…. oh how much I have learned since then! I finally bought a decent rotary cutter, and I’ve read some online tutorials about piecing squares, sewing down the center and cutting to make to finished triangle blocks.
This quilt is 45″ x 45″ and it hangs on our breakfast room wall.
This quilt is machine pieced but hand quilted. Here’s a close up of the stitching:
I had this quilt nearly finished, awaiting binding, for several months. I was afraid I’d mess up this nice quilt because I wasn’t quite sure I was doing the binding right. I found another tutorial online showing a great way to do binding, and this was the quilt I tried it on. Since I’ve bound this one (and I think it turned out great!), I’ve gone on to bind all of my other unfinished quilts, and can confidently say my binding skills are 100% better!
Here is the finished quilt, adorning the wall where I see it all the time (and it makes me happy):

Love this quilt. The color design, fading from black to gray to a barely-there gray reminds me of a black & white photo.
I really appreciate you entering quilt competitions for the experience of doing it. I’m about to enter, for the second year in a row, the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition in the U.K. Last year I didn’t even win an honorable mention, but I learned a lot at looking who the winners and runners-up were.
As for everyone who now wants to copy your quilt, I guess one could think that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. My thought is that you could have a second career designing quilts and selling quilt kits to others. Amy Butler, whose fabrics and sewing patterns I love, does quilts, too. http://www.amybutlerdesign.com/main.php?fl=0 So there is money to be made doing quilts without having to make them all yourself.
LOL – of course I like your colorway – I have enough material left from my B&W to make your wonderful pattern too!
Barb, I’ve got more designs in the works — I would love to have some Amy Butler style fame. I can’t really take another pattern and use it — I have to modify or come up with my own. It’s the designer in me.
I really appreciate all of the new views and comments — I hope to eventually be prolific enough to have a following.
